At one point in a program with Arnab Mukherjee on Modi’s not wearing the skull cap, panelist Siddharth Nath Singh asked another panelist Bukhari, “ What comes first for you God or Nation?’ he was trying to imply the answer should be , “ Nation’. To me that is patently absurd. I thought the question is a no-brainer. If you believe in God, God comes before everything else. A nation is there today , not there tomorrow. What was India once is Pakistan today. What was Pakistan yesterday is Bangladesh today. What was Sikkim yesterday is India today. What was Tibet yesterday is China today. But if you believe in God he is the same since eternity. I do not think there is any religion that recognizes God allows anything else to be superior to God. In Sanskrit, there is a line, “ Janani Janmabhoomi Swargadapi Gariyasi.’ It translates : Mother and motherland are greater than Heaven. But no religion I know says Mother or Motherland is above God. I am surprised Siddharth Nath Singh even dare suggest something like that.
