At the 98 gathering in DC honoring Kwame Ture, just before he - TopicsExpress

At the 98 gathering in DC honoring Kwame Ture, just before he passed, I remember the story of how Marion Barry, Cleve Sellers and others searched in rural Mississippi for their comrades James Earl Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Mickey often hiding out and sleeping in barns at night to keep from being killed themselves by racists. The last time I saw and spoke with Marion Barry was at the SNCC Reunion at Shaw University in Raleigh. I had the pleasure of driving him back to his hotel and we spoke of me writing something with him (which sadly didnt happen). Before that the most interesting time I spend with him (and Reverend Jackson) was backstage at the 92 Democratic Convention in NYC. When the Mayor went on the floor many shunned him - many of whom ended up not having as much staying power as he ended up having despite his travails. Even at that moment in history I realized that fair weather political friends where just that and that he would have the last laugh. Rest in Power Brother!
