At the recent SJ retreat in Village of Jemez Springs at the Bodhi - TopicsExpress

At the recent SJ retreat in Village of Jemez Springs at the Bodhi Manda, we were introduced to whirling, as in whirling dervishes. While I had long known the term, I never looked it up. Whirling is a devotional practice of the Sufis, a mystical branch of Islam. Mysticism in religion, as I interpret it, is the direct experience of God without the intercession of any other person or religious figure. Thomas Merton was a well known Catholic mystic. For most Americans, the great Persian poet Rumi is probably the best known Sufi mystic. One of the guys sent me this CNN report. https://youtube/watch?v=jDwnEhMGjCk These events are very solemn occasions. While it might be entertaining, it is above all a devotional practice as you can see in other videos where the preceding processional is like monks silently entering a temple for prayer.
