At the turn of the Century, long before there was a Pogos, Winsteads or Volker Park, life centered around home for society girls growing up in Kansas City. Most young women stayed home and learned the ways of nice people. They learned to observe ladylike hours which meant eleven oclock for their friends and midnight for tramps. The rules were strict, but Victorian girls didnt always make the deadline. A favorite evenings pastime was music at home with their boy friend. But at eleven oclock when mother tapped her heel on the upstairs floor, the boy had to leave. The word dating had not yet been coined. Boys went calling in the evening or on Sunday afternoon. Girls measured their popularity by the number of callers on Sunday.
