At this point in time Im not really sure what to make of Mississippi. As many people have reported and pontificated about, Mississippi has passed Senate Bill 2681, which bears some similarities to the Religious Freedom bill which was vetoed in Arizona earlier this year. It is true; such a piece of legislation is saddening and shows a lack of cultural awareness and human sensitivity, in addition to lack of assessing real priorities. Mississippi has some of the lowest education standards. Health among the population is poor at best. Additionally, the state seems to have a love affair with its past (a. k. a. heritage). Most people use these types of things as a point for learning, review and examination. We use it as a tourism tactic. (The Blues, William Faulkner, Civil War.. think about all of their connections) Its even more frustrating knowing that there are conservative leaning people who live in MississIppi who have good brains, and affirm a bit more socially liberal stance than their Republican colleagues, yet they seem to lack the courage, the will or the resolve to actually address their party leaders. They vote Republican just like their parents voted Southern Democrat, because the party name was what was right, not what the party stood for. And I guess i should further qualify for all my non-Mississippi readers the Mississippi Democratic really offers no LGBT rights either.. But Im going to stop there and turn the focus not to only Mississippi, but the nation, and LGBT community therein. It seems things have been going quite well for us. However we are going to come to a cross-road where all the low hanging fruit will be gone. As difficult as it was to pick this fruit, the war has raised its wager against us. We have to meet that bet or fold. For me this year when I think about the concept of Pride, I think we should focus our attention to communities that dont have NYC/LA /SF camera appeal. We need to encourage the non-profit organizations which we donate to; to put their attention in communities where there will be sacrifice, investment, and possibly little progress; at first. By moving the farthest right parts of the country to the left, we can move the rest of the country. Its super easy to say, Look at that bigoted state between Alabama and Louisiana, what a backwards-ass governor. But what have you personally done to help the situation. You think HRC has ever given three shits about helping Mississippi? Though I live out here because of my career, there is a part of me who will always hope for progress back home where I came from. What will you do? Will you just spit on that which is already broken, or will you be bigger and try and help fix it?
