At this time Atlantic management had given production duties to Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, who at first were somewhat uncomfortable because their forte was comedy. The Coasters had tremendous chart success because of the comedic songs written by Lieber and Stoller. With The Drifters they decided that they would have other composers provide the material, but they would still be in charge of sound and production, so Lieber and Stoller drafted Carole King & Gerry Goffin, Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, Burt Bacharach and Hal David.....and so many hits followed. But Lieber and Stoller did compose original material for the Drifters, one was a comedy (If You Dont Come Back). The other song was something revolutionary, the unique Rat Race, that doesnt sound like any thing else the Drifters had done. The songs charted at #101 and #71 in 1963
