At work, near the end of the day, walking across the road to the parking garage, an SUV approaches, accelerating right towards me as if to run me down. I looked up at the driver and expected to see the grinning face of one of those long time friends from old school or old jobs or from the military, one of those crazy friends from 30 or 40 years ago, cats close like family, from a time in your life when you had friends who may have been allowed to play with your life and a speeding vehicle or maybe a firearm. Instead, I realize hes a wide eyed frightened dad running late for a family rendezvous at the Childrens Center. Hes obviously struggling for all hes worth trying to bring the vehicle to a stop. Though at the time, it totally seemed like I brought the truck to a stop at an appropriately safe distance using only my mind. There was a definite comical relief to my confidence, my huge smile at the driver, I wanted to stop and joke with him that its OK, that this isnt how Im doing down. He drove away, totally freaked out. At this point in my life, I certainly do not expect a silly truck, or airplane or motorcycle...(ok, maybe a motorcycle), could kill me. As a young man, I always had the best guardian angels in the business. Seems I still do. Though it may seem to be most Mens emotional default setting, I wouldnt want to be nineteen or twenty years old again for anything. LESSON: even though a stage4 diagnosis provides the real luxury of knowing youre not likely dying in a stupid accident, it still pays to be careful and to pay attention to everything.
