Ateneo stuns defending champ Ford in opener of Davao inter-school tourney DAVAO CITY, Aug. 5 (PNA) -– Ateneo de Davao University made its presence felt with a smashing 30-point victory over defending champion Ford Academy, 67-37, in the opening game of the annual 4th Royal Mandaya Cup Inter-School Basketball tournament Sunday at the Almendras gym here. The five-some of Darryl Manliquez, Raphael Francisco, Ion Angeles, Jay Beldua and Francis Escandor were unstoppable in the first quarter as Ateneo made an explosive start with a 23-10 blast in the first quarter for a 15-point lead, 33-18, after the first half. In the third canto, Lex Blanco and Vande Alagao took turns to keep Ateneo’s offensive run for a 51-29 advantage. Almost all of Ateneo’s 15 players scored, led by Manliquez with 10 points. Exequiel Austria made 18 points for Ford followed by John Buhian and Jex Anonuevo both with only six markers. Ateneo, third runner-up last year, also took advantage on the absence of Ford’s main scorer Jessie Requillo, who injured his right arm in a separate tournament and was advice to rest for two weeks, said coach Bambi Santander. “Winning against Ford by 30 was a pretty good sign given that it was our first game this season,” said Ateneo coach Miggy Solitaria, a former Blue Knight star player. Assumption College of Davao (ADC) also made a good start and recovered just in time in the final quarter to beat last year’s runner-up Holy Child College of Davao, 68-64, also in the Cadet (14 under) division. Organizer and city sports consultant Glenn Escandor led the opening rites graced also by City Sports Chief Butch Ramirez, Land Transportation Office assistant regional director Bong Gonzaga and Boyet Escandor of The Royal Mandaya Hotel.
