Attended : NSA Surveillance and Our Almost Orwellian State January 23, 2014 - 7:30pm Berkeley, CA Join us for NSA Surveillance and Our ‘Almost Orwellian’ State, hosted by St. John’s Presbyterian Church on Thursday, January 23, 2014. Didnt like how they screened questions - to pick the good ones - wish we could have just lined up at microphone, Cindy Cohn said their are no alternatives for Internet besides the duopoly - how could someone working on these issues not know their are 1000s of ISPs still kicking - and some kicking tail. I said hi - gave her my card and told her Yes Virginia, Their are local ISPS! She seemed please to hear it! Talked to Norm Soloman - he hasnt read the stratfor cables. Well a lot of people havent. I could be a plaintiff because I was on their mailing list - I wonder if I could free Barrett Brown by claiming I had standing???? - How can you understand the security state - without at least reading a summary of the Strafor cables. Guy seems great though - although looked a little slick - but cool organization rootsaction.org Outside met 2 Occupy Oakland guys Ed the Red a lawyer who never practiced law, and a real original Beatnik poet musician Orion I guarantee you would like Orion with long hair and beard. Wrote the song Everybody must get droned And a very smart young man who will remain nameless (leave something for the state to wonder about) side note: Sybel Edmonds has gone off the Alex Jones canyon or worse. Stunning woman for her age - but lacks scientific rigor - in my humble opinion. I saw some of her spleen directed inexplicably at Greenwald. back to narrative: Ellsberg was surrounded by a couple of dozen people - so I did not shoehorn my way in. Would have if I had brought his book with me to get his signature. But the issue about just what is going on with the deep state and the oligarchy - whats REALLY going on - was not analyzed. Though Ellsberg touched upon it - he talked about the Constitution Cheney would have liked - and it reminded me of Peter Dale Scots analysis of the Continuity Of Government program. Scott introduced me to the phrase deep state - I talking I tried to emphasize the Ark - for me thats reindustrializing our communities, coops, local currencies, and all that good small is beautful and Gar Alperovitz stuff (who was just interviewed by Paul Jay on the Real News Here is the blorb - was well attended (Its Berkeley after all) Address: St. Johns Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Avenue, Berkeley, CA The event is open to the public. A donation will be requested, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds will benefit the Bill of Rights Defense Committee and the Freedom of the Press Foundation. The discussion will be led by a formidable cast of advocates including: Cindy Cohn, Legal Director and General Counsel of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Ms. Cohn serves as counsel in First Unitarian Church v. NSA and Jewel v. NSA, each seeking to stop the ongoing dragnet warrantless surveillance of millions of ordinary Americans. Daniel Ellsberg, the iconic whistleblower and national hero described by President Nixon as the most dangerous man in America, and co-founder of Freedom of Press Foundation. Norman Solomon, Journalist, media critic, anti-war activist, co-founder of RootsAction.org, founding director of Institute for Public Accuracy, and author of War Made Easy. Shahid Buttar, Executive Director of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, constitutional lawyer, grassroots organizer, independent columnist, musician, and poet. Robert Jaffee, a volunteer attorney on the Hedges v. Obama case challenging indefinite detention without trial, will moderate the discussion. He and the panelists will discuss issues including: Whether dragnet NSA surveillance is constitutional, and the dueling federal court rulings in December The history of government secrecy, and how it relates to the mounting controversy surrounding NSA spying How the NSA dragnet threatens not only to privacy, but also freedom and democracy The role of the press, and the tremendous contributions of Edward Snowden, Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras, and others Prospects for legislative reforms in Congress, and opportunities for grassroots action going forward
