Attention: November 19, 2014 Misdial Trap The report states the fraudsters are purchasing phone numbers similar to legitimate businesses. They pose as that businesss customer service line when customers misdial. This ploy is similar to phishing attacks luring unsuspecting to fraudulent websites mimicking legitimate ones. When a customer is fooled, they pretend they are customer service for the mimicked company the fraudster uses social engineering techniques to collect personally identifiable customer information. At times the fraudster will offer a free gift for their assistance. FIs should consider notifying their employees about this scam and remind them that this is the time of year that fraudsters attempt various schemes to acquire customer information and commit the following higher risk fraud types: • Electric Funds Transfer (ACH & Wire Transfer) • Deposit and On-us Check (e.g. Altered, Counterfeit & Forgery) • Credit & Debit Card (Internet, Counterfeit Cards) • Quick Change Artist
