Attention Sixth grade science teachers: this is a story of how one organism was released and eliminated an outcropping of an exotic specie at Sleeping Bear. National park rangers from Sleeping Bear Dunes were on South Manitou Island treating invasive leafy spurge on the dunes. They noticed that the plants were covered by dozens of caterpillars and most of the plants were almost completely defoliated! What they found was the Leafy Spurge Hawk Moth, an insect that was released out west and in Canada as a biocontrol for leafy spurge. Its incredible that these caterpillars somehow found this isolated patch of leafy spurge on an island in the middle of Lake Michigan! Amazing. msue.anr.msu.edu/news/spurge_hawk_moth_found_in_michigan
