Attention delegates to the Peoples Assembly recall conference - Teesside PAs motion on #EconomicDemocracy has been missed out of the booklet. We have been told this will be resolved by Friday. But here it is for your consideration: Conference notes: 1. the permanent austerity promised for the public sector is a policy also pursued by unelected business leaders in the private sector; 2. the power of banks and big businesses is guaranteed by the state through the privilege of limited liability – without any responsibility to represent citizens in corporate governance; 3. an investment strike is ongoing: big businesses are hoarding cash because they are run to maximise profits for shareholders – it is not profitable enough to increase investment to deal with pressing problems such as climate change and the need to decarbonise energy generation. Conference believes: 1. austerity is a class project – not just a damaging economic policy – designed to enforce the privilege of a powerful minority at the expense of the majority of working people and our environment; 2. the corporate power of big business cannot be made accountable to the public under a capitalist economy; Conference resolves: 1. to campaign for economic democracy; 2. to express solidarity with existing forms of economic democracy, including trade unions, cooperatives and credit unions; 3. to demand that capitalist enterprises open the books and have their state subsidies (including limited liability) ended, with those firms unable to survive on this basis being expropriated without compensation.
