Attention fellow MTG players: So a friend and I had a friendly disagreement yesterday and I simply wanted to get everyone elses opinion on it. Simply for the sake of debate, I welcome all opinions, though please express WHY you feel the way you do and be prepared for possible rebuttal! We were discussing the use of proxies (fake, printed cards) in casual play. First let me tell you my stance on their use and then Id like to hear your opinions. To me, in casual play with your buddies, you play the game to have FUN. You also play the game to test your deck building abilities vs your opponents. You DONT play it to see who has the bigger wallet. Magic is an EXPENSIVE game to play, and though I dont in any way condone stealing the cards (which hurts local guys like Shane), your bank account shouldnt play a primary role in determining who will win most games. Better cards dont NECESSARILY mean victory, but they damn SURE give you an edge...a big one if youre an experienced player. A $700 deck is going to flatten a $70 deck 9.9 times out of 10 given equal player skill. That being said, in a casual atmosphere, if youre playing proxied cards that you actually intend on BUYING as soon as you can and its not some ultra rare, ultra expensive card that everyone KNOWS youll never buy.....I welcome the use of proxies to increase the enjoyment of the game. THIS is why I dont count use of proxies in THIS manner as stealing....because if I proxy a card, Im GOING to buy it....I just may not have the funds at that particular moment. Does that mean that I should not be able to play because I cant build my whole deck immediately upon conception? Does it mean I should have to play with a weaker version of my deck because I didnt have hundreds of dollars to drop on cards at that very moment? Deck design is a big part of the game for me and I want my decks to run 100% how I designed them. I want any wins or losses for my decks to occur when they are running at full strength or it doesnt count in my mind. Basically that means Im not going to play a deck at 60% strength because I couldnt afford (at the moment) some very expensive cards. Times when proxies are NOT acceptable: 1) In a competetive environment 2) When its a card youll NEVER actually buy (Black Lotus etc) Wrote this in a hurry and didnt proofread, hope it all makes sense even if not concise lol. Now, let the debate begin!
