Its pejorative, discriminatory, unjust, insensitive to the plight of the poor. Yeah, they have fault but we and the government have also shares in this social problem. Lets be sensitive, even in our words. Pero baka naman mamaya pag may nakita kayong ganun na nagkakagulo-gulo o napaka-unruly sa corridor or walang social grace sa pagkain or yung sinasabi niyong ugaling squatter, eh baka naman sabihan nyo na lang ng Hey, you, informal settlers. Reflections: Discourse can change the status quo--but not instantly. They can alter our worldviews, values, norms, and perspective. By changing the way we approach the issue, we can eventually transform and change the status quo. Terminology matters.
