Aug 28th 7-10PM Open Forum on The Republican National Convention https://facebook/events/542239769236512/ Over the past couple of week the fervor around the announcement that the RNC is to be held in Cleveland in 2016 has gone relatively unchallenged. There have been some beacons of critical light showing through the constant stream of propaganda coming from the city government and tourism bureau, beacons that point to a future period of time in this city that is far from the utopian visions coming from City Hall. Millions of dollars will be spent, the entirety of downtown will be closed off, armies of cops will descend onto the city to defend the walls that will turn downtown into a fortress, and this is only what occurs during the convention. The entire terrain of the city has changed, the priorities of the city have been changed, and this has all passed through during closed hearings on Emergency Resolutions in City Council. It is time to begin a process of discussing the real costs of the RNC, not just of these three days, but of what this means for the city as a whole for the next two years, and for the years following the actual events themselves. To facilitate this discussion, and to provide a space for a myriad of voices to be able to be heard, Guide to Kulchur will be hosting an open forum discussion, hosted by Lyz Bly, on what impacts the Republican National Convention will have on the people of this city, not as a political event, but as a fixture of our terrain, of our space.
