August 11, 2014 Dear Dr. Murad, Thank you for writing to me about the escalating violence in Gaza and Israel. I appreciate the time you took to write to me about this tragic situation. Im deeply troubled and saddened by the deliberate targeting of innocent people. The coldblooded killings of three Israeli boys by Hamas, and one Palestinian boy by Israeli extremists in retaliation escalated tensions that had been growing since the collapse of the American-led peace talks. As you know, the total death toll from the conflict that escalated over a month ago has neared 2,000. Hamas and Islamic Jihad who have claimed responsibility for the attacks in Israel have now reached targets much deeper into Israel than in the past and are expanding targets across the country. I continue to support a two-state solution in order to bring peace to the region but both parties must make a concerted effort to embrace policies that will bring both sides to the negotiating table. Much time has been lost and so much suffering continues. Thank you again for writing to me, and if you have any other questions or comments, let me hear from you.
