August 21, 2013 Rock Collection This summer I brought my childhood rock collection home from my parents’ house. I couldn’t wait to share it with my kids. They were amazed at all the geodes with their hollowed out insides and sparkly crystals. Yes, especially with these girls, sparkly is totally cool! Then I showed them how they could take a rock from outside and crack it open with a hammer to see what was inside. Pretty soon they wanted to collect every rock they found, no matter how dull it looked and they wanted to smash every rock in sight to see what they might find inside. The LORD says that his Word is like a “hammer that breaks a rock in pieces” (Jeremiah 23:29). The rocks that he is talking about are our hearts. But God doesn’t need to break a selfish sinful heart in pieces to find out what it is made out of any more than he needs to break an actual rock into pieces to find out what it is made of. He already knows. Really, it is for us that he does this… so we can see what our hearts are made of. When his Word does this, what we find isn’t a bunch of sparkly crystals, reflecting the light, but the darkness of sin. Yet, while the hammer of God’s Word smashes the idea that we can save ourselves, it also has the power to give us a new heart and life that reflects his love. Trusting in Jesus as your Savior, you are a part of God’s rock collection. He didn’t pick us up because we were so beautiful inside. But in smashing our sinful pride and creating faith in our hearts that clings to Jesus, he has made us beautiful in God’s sight. Now, because of him, more and more we reflect the light of his love.
