August 8, 2013 Update Connie’s finishing teaching summer school - TopicsExpress

August 8, 2013 Update Connie’s finishing teaching summer school today. That must mean regular school is just around the corner. The mornings are feeling like summer is on its way out. I don’t like it but I do like the fall weather. If there was a way to skip winter and start spring after fall? That would be ok with me. Physical Therapy has gone well this summer. My strength has improved a lot. I’m able to move around with a slide board quite well. My PT would like to see me transition from my powerchair to my manual chair. I could travel out of town a lot easier if I wasn’t dependent on my powerchair. I haven’t got to the point of self-transfers. I blame my feet, but that’s just an excuse I use rather than me not working hard enough to make progress. That brings me to my fall request for your help. This way I can blame you for my shortcomings. If I could get a few volunteers to come by to help me into my manual chair and motor around our neighborhood once or twice a week for an hour. It won’t take much strength or speed. I don’t weigh much more than a bag of feed and I only break walking speed on a steep downhill with a strong wind at my back. You may have to push my chair once in a while on the inclines and cross-slopes. I don’t whine much during workouts. You can ask my PT’s and CNA’s. They never hear me whine much, barely at all, practically never, maybe a little. The more volunteers I get the less you’ll have to come by, so tell a friend. I hope to get a couple CSU students to spend time with me. They always need to pad their resumes with good deeds in the community. I’m ready to start so drop by anytime. Suppose you may want to call first. I’m at PT three times a week and in the standing frame twice a week. I do ride on Wednesday but other than that I’m mostly available. Connie and I are having a get-together Friday, August 16, 4:30 to 6:30ish to say thank you to everyone who helped us move. Even if you only helped in spirit stop by and say hello. We want to show everyone our new home. It’s not a house warming so don’t bring gifts. If you must bring something, bring something to sit on. The plan is if it’s cool we’ll sit in the sun, if it’s hot we’ll sit in the shade, if it’s wet we’ll sit in the house. Since it is Colorado we may sit in all three spots in 2 hours! The modifications to make the house accessible aren’t complete and certainly won’t be done by the 16th, but the house is completely functional. I just have to drive careful and keep the touch-up paint handy. The final bathroom mods should start this month. The contractor is coming by tomorrow morning with his list of “why I haven’t started” excuses all prepared. The county is paying the bill so they choose the contractor. I’m a little scared of what we’re getting into, but we may be pleasantly surprised? Oh, stop laughing, it can happen. Our contractor was going to email me his diagram for the front ramp. I needed to turn it into the HOA for their approval on Tuesday. Just in case he didn’t get the diagram to me before the Tuesday meeting I drafted a letter for the ramp. It was a good thing because I didn’t get a diagram from the contractor. The ramp was approved with final approval coming with the submission of a diagram. Yesterday and this morning I drew up a plan for the ramp at the front exit. It’s just a schematic but I’m sure it’s all the HOA needs. It’s been a long time since I’ve done much drawing but I haven’t forgotten everything I once knew. Well the afternoon is flying by and you’re nodding off so I better wrap this update up. We hope to see you August 16th and if we don’t see you then we wish you a beautiful autumn. Mike and Connie
