Auntie Joan Update for all of you Calais People. She is about at the 75% mark of her rehab therapy in just a little over a month ( it was a month the 28th) of PT and OT. She amazes me every single day after a traumatic head injury in 1986 she knocked all her Dr. Socks off because she was not supposed to ever walk again ,talk etc and she did all of that plus. She has lived by herself at her home managing everything since 1996. A little over 2 years ago she had a mild stroke and yet again she woke every day to greet her day with a smile and a "What do I need to do today"? Last summer she spent 12 weeks in the Calais hospital with a severe Mersa infection in the foot she has no feeling in due to not only her head injury but also lack of circulation from her diabetes. She left CRH without any strengthening therapies (why we do not know) as she was left in a very weakened state due to laying in a bed for 12 weeks, yet again she greeted each day and its trials and tribulations with a smile and she plugged away taking care of her home which she lives for and in May she had a combination of a bout of the stomach flu which she became dehydrated and a kidney infection which went septic into her blood she was very ill. After a few days in the Calais hospital she went to EMMC and after barley a week she went to Ross Manor for Rehab .On June 28 she was discharged and came home with me and my family to continue rehab until she was strong enough to go home. She began with needing 2 people to assist her to a standing position and with the aid of her walker and 2 people to assist to walk short distances, and in the matter of just a few weeks she is up an about needing very little assistance. her therapists are amazed that someone who has gone through so much has such an incredible ,positive outlook and willing to do whatever it takes so she can get home! My mother ,her older sister and Aunt Joan are the strongest individuals I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and I feel pretty darn lucky to be related to ,two very independent, strong, strong willed , smart women. I hope I can do them proud and be as strong as they both are! We should all be so fortunate to have people in our lives like my mom and my Aunt!!They are of a rare breed that is for sure! Aunt Joan will be going home next weekend for the International Festival she is excited and nervous at the same time as she says she is going to miss Lincoln and my busy house!
