Aussie classics (continued): The Twilights. Arguably the best Aussie live band of their era, this group of mainly British immigrant kids from Adelaide shot to fame in 1965/66 with a string of local hits (produced by the great David Woodley-Page) and a dynamic live act that featured two lead singers, Glenn Shorrock (later of LRB) and Paddy McCartney (no relation). Their early singles and albums featured a bunch of classic covers of hot Mod tracks including Beatles, Who, and Small Faces songs, and they broke through nationally with their barnstorming version of Needle In A Haystack. They won the inaugural Hoadleys Battle of the Sounds in 1966, went to the UK, and recorded at Abbey Rd, cutting a swag of classic tracks, including what I think is the definitive version of this Hollies classic, which was highly praised by writer Graham Nash. Sadly, it didnt become a hit because (in what became a recurring pattern for UK-based Aussie bands) EMI reneged on their promise not to release the Hollies version as a competing single. When they came back to Australia in early 1967 they were doing what their idols The Beatles couldnt do - playing the entire Sgt Pepper album live, and note-perfect - much to the chagrin of EMI, who apparently asked them to desist. Glenn of course went on to great success with Axiom, Esperanto and finally LRB, who finally achieved in the USA what so many Aussie groups had attempted and failed to achieve in the UK. Guitarist Terry Britten went back to the UK, where he became a very successful songwriter, penning many hits including Tina Turners Whats Love Got To Do With It?.
