Autumn Starts in August It’s mid-August. Have you started - TopicsExpress

Autumn Starts in August It’s mid-August. Have you started your fall crops yet? If not, why? Get those seed starts going now! You will be growing pretty much the same plants as you did in spring: spinach, lettuce, chard, peas, and radishes. If you’d like to try broccoli, be my guest; however, I never had any luck with broc. If you start the seeds indoors, you will simply transplant them in September; however, if you plant directly in your garden, pick a shadier spot for them lest they bolt right off the starting block. Remember not to plant in the area where you just grew something in the same family, for example: If you planted beets in that particular spot, don’t grow chard there. They are in the same family. You wouldn’t grow potatoes where you grew tomatoes last year, so don’t grow peas where you planted beans last. Simple rotation of crops. Also recall that you should rebuild your soil after each harvest. That means a bit of compost and light mulching till the transplants take root. Then you will mulch more heavily to keep out weeds. If you live in an area where it rains more frequently in the fall, don’t plant in a deep well. Make the well shallow and, as the plants grow, fill the wells with mulch. If you use plastic mulch—you are BAD! BAD! Fire and brimstone awaits you! Of course, your gardens are raised-bed, right? And if you live in a wetter zone, you have provided ample drainage beneath the grow zone of the longest radicals (roots) in your beds. Those probably are your tomatoes (which can reach three feet down for water). Also, you weren’t so cuckoo as to plant your garden next to trees that seek an easy hand out such as willows, maples, aspens, etc. right? Right? So what are you doing sitting there? Get up and get those seeds now!
