Avoid the movie Whiplash. It is terrible on many levels! It gives an extremely inaccurate portrayal of playing in a jazz band, jazz education, and what is involved in becoming a musician. It is devoid of any sense of the joy, camaraderie, creativity and teamwork involved in playing jazz - and the generous passion that so many jazz educators share. And it hardly had any improvisation in it. And jazz drumming is not just about being able to play fast. It is a missed opportunity to give true insight into the fantastic world of jazz big bands - and even works against it. Even more disturbing is that it got 96% approval ratings from critics and audience on Rotten Tomatoes. It may have been dramatic, but totally inaccurate. For those who have seen it, cleanse yourselves by watching some of the videos of the wonderful Essentially Ellington Festival, where Wynton Marsalis and others feature some of the best high school jazz bands in the country in workshops and performances. That festival is remarkably supportive and energetic. Totally inspiring. https://youtube/watch?v=B9oaYBnrtQI
