Awareness Film Nights Jo Phillips, Dogwood Sookes Ron Ramsay and - TopicsExpress

Awareness Film Nights Jo Phillips, Dogwood Sookes Ron Ramsay and myself spent this morning at Ecole Poirier Elementary talking to grade three, four and five students about democratic rights & responsibilities in general and the plebiscite oil tanker question in particular. Such a bright, inquisitive audience! Our show-and-tell and their Q&A covered the good, bad and ugly of fossil fuels - definitely the ugly given that Ron had sourced samples of oil-caked seaweed that date back to the 1988 clean-up of our southern Van Isle coastline following the Nestucca barge spill. Almost everyone thrust their hands up when asked if they knew about the local election. A surprisingly (to me) large number get it re: our rights and freedoms (and understand that Remembrance Day, which was marked with many art projects at the school, salutes those who defended said rights). And many also knew that increased oil tanker traffic poses increased risks to our offshore maritime garden (to use Rons metaphor). Definitely the most delightful experience of my campaign so far. Thanks to Poirier VP Ms. Millen, Caledonia Robertson, the teachers and all those lively yet well-behaved Panthers for making us welcome. :-)
