Awesome Chaplain Barry Stagner The Lord will be awesome to them, for He will reduce to nothing all the gods of the earth; people shall worship Him, each one from his place, indeed all the shores of the nations. (Zephaniah 2:11) Some of you may be thinking, Whats a Zephaniah? Zephaniah is not a what but a who, and his name means hidden in the Lord. Zephaniah was a prophet who warned Israel of Babylonian exile and captivity if they did not repent of their idolatry. While Josiah was king in the seventh century BC, Zephaniahs message did indeed bear impact, and the nation of Judah did indeed experience revival for a time. But Bible history tells us that after King Josiahs death, the kingdom of Judah reverted to its old ways. Only fifty years later, Babylon invaded and destroyed Jerusalem and carried off captive many of the children of Israel. Someday every knee will bow, but you can bow right now because God is awesome to you!. Zephaniah prophesied, much like Joel and Zechariah, of a day when all the things that people worship, every false religion and idol, are going to be exposed for what they are-nothing! The Lord will be awesome in that day. This is not a whoa, dude, thats awesome kind of awesome. No, this is awesome in the sense of a majestic display of divine power that reduces everything people worship other than God Himself to nothing. We often sing, Our God is an awesome God, and indeed He is. But thats not written with the intent some seem to sing it with, like Our God is way cool. What that song really means is that our God will display His awesome power against every false religion and idol and put them on public and permanent display as the nothing they really are. And in that day, people will worship Him. Now thats awesome! You dont have to wait until then to worship Him in all His majesty and glory. You are free to do that right now in this age of false religions and idols all around you.
