Ayrshire Officer Plays A Special Role In The #BatonRelay Ayrshire Division Special Constable, Sarah Jackson, was nominated and thereafter selected as one of the local Baton Bearers chosen to carry the Queens Baton as it made its way through South Ayrshire on Friday 20th June. On the day Sarah received the baton about 6.30pm before making her way along a section of the route in Prestwick. We recently caught up with Sarah for a quick chat about the event and her role as a Special Constable in Ayrshire. Q. How did it feel to be selected as a Baton Bearer? A. It felt great to be selected as a Baton Bearer in my local community - I was nominated by my sister for my voluntary work and fundraising activities. For the past 5 years I have been volunteering as a sports coach for young people in local schools and sports clubs and I have been fundraising for local clubs and charities in the area. Q. How did it feel as you made your way through the streets of Prestwick on the day of the Baton Relay? A. On the day the weather was great, the sun was shining and the streets were packed with people - there was a great atmosphere in the town. Local residents and my family and friends all turned out to watch the event. Prior to carrying the Baton I got the chance to meet the Baton Relay Team - they kept us on track and made sure my fellow Baton Bearers and I were at our designated points on time. Everyones support and the cheering from the sidelines made it even more memorable. The local Police officers on the day did an amazing job as did the security escort runners who were so encouraging and motivating after what had already been a long day for them all. Q. We understand you have another important role to play in the Glasgow 2014 story - can you tell us about this? A. Yes, I have been selected as part of the cast for the Closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on August 3rd at Hampden Park. I cant say much more at present about this event but from what Ive seen it promises to be a great event. Q. How long have you been a Special Constable? A. I have been a Special Constable for nearly 3 years now and I am based at Troon Police office. I regularly work with the local Community Policing Team in Troon to keep people safe. During my time in Ayrshire Division I have been extremely fortunate to have been able to gain experience in a variety of situations. I have attended incidents of antisocial behaviour, violence and theft and have been out and about with the team meeting members of the local community and discussing any concerns they may have. Q. What made you apply to join the Special Constabulary? A. I applied to join the Specials just after I started at Uni. I believed this to be a great opportunity to give something back to the community where I grew up while continuing my studies and other voluntary activities in the area. In the future I intend to apply to join the Police as a full-time officer and this has provided me with a great insight into the varied work of Police Scotland. Q. In three words how would you describe your role as a Special Constable working in Ayrshire Division? A. Enjoyable, rewarding and opportunities.
