Ayurvastra---Healthy Fabrics Ayurvastra is a branch of Ayurveda, the ancient 5,000 year old Indian system of Vedic healthcare. Loosely translated, “Ayur” is Sanskrit for health, and “Vastra” is clothing ,Ayurvastra means Healthy Fabrics Ayurvastra project is initiated and launched by the Directorate of Handloom, Department of Industries and Commerce and the Department of Government Ayurveda College, aimed at creating a niche for the eco-friendly wellness textiles ( Deying the textiles using ayurvedic herbs and plants and 100% free from toxic and artificial chemicals) . Inspired by the concept Mr Sujeev Head of 50Years old traditional handloom firm at balaramapuram , kerala , South India Kairali Exports started manufactured Ayurvastra concept Textiles for this Kairali Exports tied up with organic cotton producers , Ayurvedic Herbal dyers , Handloom Weavers ,Garment Makers, Kalamkari Painters for making Ayurvastra based textiles. In 2006 First branded bedsheet was launched in kerala and supplied to all leading shops in kerala , and now due to consumer awareness in wellness clothing , there was good demand in domestic and international market , kairali exports is exporting ayurvastra fabrics to almost all part of the globe through marketing agents , designers and resellers . Since most of the Herbal textile available in the market is still processed using chemicals for eg: the pre-processing is done using chemicals like washing soda / chemical wet oils / acetic acids , only the dyes are taken from natural sources , so there is no much difference from the synthetic dyes but Ayurvastra is completly free from synthetic & toxic chemicals because from pre-processing of fabrics to the end product all is from natural material & ayurvedic herbs and plants The process of herbal dyeing starts with the grey cloth passing through several stages of treatment before it becomes colourful and ready to wear. Desizing - The washing of processed greige cloth starts with removing sizing, gums and oils used in the course of weaving by boiling and washing with natural mineral-rich water ,sea salts , cow urine etc. Bleaching - Fabrics are exposed to direct sunlight, use of a natural grass base and animal manure starts the bleaching process. Mordanting – Our unique method of mordanting natural mordants such as Myrballams, Pomagranate , rhubarb leaves, Natural oils, minerals, alum, iron water , are used. No heavy metal mordants like copper, chrome, zinc, tin, etc., have been used. Dyeing – Ayurvedic & Medicinally rich herbs formulations using plant material are made and boiled in a control temperature , the medicinal properties and the dye pigment are extracted and dissolve in the dye bath , For eg we commonly use , turmeric, Myraballm, Pomegranate , Onion Skin ,Maddar , Indigo ,neem leaf , holy basil , vettiver , castor oil, sea salt also used etc are used for dyeing of the fabric or yarn. The medicinal qualities of the herbs are retained by immersing the plant material directly in the dye bath. The cloth does not loose its medicinal effect even after constant use since the medical dyes (herbs) go into the yarn itself. The yarn is dipped into the herbs and the fabric is dipped again. Finishing - This is done by sprinkling pure water, Aloe Vera, Castor oil etc on the cloth and then stretching under pressure, using hand rolls. Recycling Plant - Solid and liquid waste is separated through the process of filtration and used for farming purposes as manure & watering the fields. Testing of Ayurvastra fabrics A clinical trail was done in Ayurvedic College Hospital with the support of Govt Agencies and the trail proves Ayurvastra can be effective for treatment of various diseases especially skin diseases Fastness As the source is from natural plants and herbs , the fastness will not be like the synthetic dyes however fastness standard 3 is mainatained (Washing condition applies) Benefits of Ayurvastra Textile industry is now getting conscious of the negative impact of the pollution it is causing. In our present busy world, these potential methods are not much explored mainly due to the time limitations and stringent practices. This lead to the rise of new branch of technical textile called Wellness textiles. As per the experts, by coming contact with herbal cloth, body loses toxins and the metabolism enhance like in case of microencapsulation technique. As skin functions as the protective barrier but also as a conduit for outside substances to enter the body, same way skin also absorb medicinal molecules from textiles and result in improved resistance against harmful substances. *---Ayurvastra should not be treated as an medicine , it supports the curing process Ayurvastra For Wellness Ayurvastra can also used as an wellness clothing by any one , Ayurvastra believes in restoring the balance within the bodys system and strengthen the immune system.
