BABY DOC EST MORT. VIVE LE HAITI! I have been to Haiti as a journalist three times. Once to cover the American-backed coup overthrowing Bertrand Aristide in 2004 and twice to cover the 2010 earthquake and its aftermath. The first time I went, The Star-Ledger forbid me to go so I took vacation to travel there and then the newspaper refused to publish my stories although an editor said they were among the best pieces I had ever written. I sold them to The New York Sun. Matt Rainey, the Pulitzer-prize winning photographer, and I got there within 36 hours of the earthquake with no back-up, nowhere to stay. It was why I had become a journalist. We were taken in by a Presbyterian minister named Rev. Jean Paul, whose orphanage was flattened by the quake. Our stories and pictures led to enormous donations of money and the rebuilding of the orphanage within six months (I am pictured with the children outside the newly rebuilt orphanage--they insisted).. The people of Haiti are indescribably welcoming, loving, patient--and oppressed. Ayiti Mwen pap janm bliye ou.
