BACOLOD City – Commuters will now have a shorter travel time from Bacolod City to Silay Airport as the P415-million access road project was opened to the public on November 15. Top provincial and city officials led the inauguration of the 10.12-kilometer 2-lane Bacolod City-Silay Airport Access Road (BSAAR), together with their Korean counterparts. The access road is seen to reduce travel time from Bacolod to the airport by 30-45 minutes. Third District Rep Alfredo Benitez led the inaugural drive through with Bacolod Lone District Rep. Evelio Leonardia, Vice Governor Eugenio Lacson and Mayors Oti Montelibano of Silay City and Eric Saratan of Talisay City. Undersecretary Rafael Yabut and assistant regional director Lea Delfinado of the Department of Public Works and Highways also graced the event. Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella, the political foe of Leonardia, was present during the blessing but left before the program inaugural drive through and the program proper held at the junction leading to the airport. The Korean counterpart Korea Eximbank was represented by Mr. Tae Ik Park. Benitez told reporters that with the completion of the access road, the extension road going north as far as Victorias City is already in the drawing board. He said the 18-kilometer road project may cost around P800 million. Meanwhile, Park said the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of Korean government is honored to be part of the Bacolod-Silay Airport Access Road Project funded by the K-EDCF. EDCF was established in 1987 with the aim of sharing Koreas development experiences with other developing countries. He said that to date, EDCF has supported 18 projects in the Philippines including Laguindingan Airport, Puerto Princesa Airport and Jalaur River Multipurpose Project, with a total amount of $741 million. EDCF has made significant contributions to strengthening bilateral economic cooperation between the Philippines and Korea, he added. “I believe that Bacolod-Silay Airport Access Road Project will become a milestone for development of Negros Occidental. Also, this project is a symbol of sound decision making by the government of the Philippines for the greater good of the people,” Park stressed. “I am very proud and moved that EDCF could contribute to such a meaningful and important project. This project will be a shining symbol of cooperation and friendship between the two countries,” Park concluded.
