< BANANA REPUBLIC FALLACIES & FALSEHOODS > Part 09-A We need to march on the streets, to let politicians know that we the people will not tolerate corruptionーthat will stop their corruption. No, you dont; and no, it wont. _ Elected officials do not fear demonstrations and riots per seーall they fear is the bad press (IF it happens AND IF it translates into the *one* thing they fear for real), and it is all a question of whether they can get away with a forceful response to protest violence. In fact, History shows that those who subsequently get ousted are the very ones who tolerated the public protests in its early stages, thus failed to stop them from escalating. The one thing that officials, whether elected or appointed, fear for real is losing officeーwhether through ouster, or failure to get reelected (for the elected), or through dismissal or failure to get reappointed (for the appointed or the civil servant). THINK I: Of what use is marching on the streets, ranting in Letters to The Editor, or flooding social media with hits, comments, Likes, Shares, tweets and retweets, if one does not > vote differently in the next election > from the way one voted in the previous one? THINK II: Of what use is declaring refusal to vote for someone whom you never voted for before anywayーyou didnt drop anyone at all then, did you? THINK III: Of what use is refusing to vote for a particular candidate when you vote for other candidates in the same political Party or coalition? THINK IV: Of what use is condemning a leader of his Party if in a subsequent election you vote for those in his Party/coalition or those whom he endorses? _ concept: ELECTORAL SWING SOBERING REALITY I: 51% voting for Party ABC versus 49% voting for Party XYZ, and the same 51% condemning XYZ together with the same 49% condemning ABC, changes nothing in electoral outcomesーthere is nothing for anyone in Party ABC nor anyone in Party XYZ to fear, thus there is no incentive to change nor disincentive for refusal. SOBERING REALITY II: Even ten million marching per se makes no difference. But where there are two electoral camps and the electoral margin is within 5~10%, even one to three million who voted ABC in a previous election switching to XYZ in a subsequent election willーas the expression goesーput the fear of God into every politician. _ CHALLENGE: Youーyes, youーare you willing to refuse to vote for anyone at all associated in any way with the incumbents in your own countrys government? If you are notーif you expect them to change but you yourself refuse toーthen you are N.A.T.O.ーno action, talk only. And talk is cheap. _ see also: other posts of the same theme, on the same date August 3, 2014 (pp)
