BATTLE OF THE OILS! KRILL vs. FISH OIL Working at the chemist the question I get asked most, excluding weight loss advice ‘is Krill oil better then fish oil?’ So thought I would shed some light into each and the differences between the two! (I apologize now for the information overload ;P) KRILL (Euphausia supeba) Refers to the bottom of the food chain crustacean Benefits -Strong antioxidant, therefore better option for cholesterol lowering as well as slight anti-inflammatory effects for joint health due to containing omega 3 (EPA+DHA) phospholipid-derived fatty acids which also contributes to heart and brain function and added benefit of choline Disadvantages -Research shows although may be greater concentration compared to fish oil, krill oils bioavailability (absorption) is reduced compared to fish oil -Ethical and Ecological concerns due to being food source for many animals and is being massed produced to meet the increase interest in the population Dose Available from 100mg-1000mg, recommended choosing above 500mg for maximum results FISH OIL dervived from the fatty oily layers of cold and deep sea fish Benefits - Fish oil has a significantly greater anti-inflammatory action with studies showing a strong benefit in reducing cholesterol including triglycerides by 20-50%, Blood pressure as well as reducing heart disease and stiffness associated with arthritis and joint pain and non steroidal ant acid (NSAID) use such as Aspirin and Nurofin -Furthermore fish oil along with B12 has shown significant results in the treatment of period pain as well as behavioral and cognitive skills and inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and acne. Disadvantages -Burping fishy odour can be common, but avoided by choosing odourless varieties as well as separating from taking with hot drinks and food as this bursts the capsule before reaching intestines were it is primarily absorbed instead of the stomach. Dose National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) state that 430mg for females and 610mg for males is recommended, with regular fish oils being generally containing 180mg per capsule, therefore taking 4-6 capsules, although a pain… is the best way to reap the benefits, but everyone is different and depending on their stress levels, smoking status, oxidative stress exposure, skin integrity and age group, may need to be increased. My personal preference is fish, due to there being greater research undergone on fish compared to Krill which is relatively new, however future research may provide further insight into Krill’s benefits, but I believe there is room in the market for both, just ensure you are choosing a reputable brand with a high dosage! The ones I recommend the most: -Natures way triple strength fish oil (capsule) -Ethical Nutrients high-strength fish oil (liquid or capsule) -Biocueticals Omegasure liquid fish oil Both oils have given customers from work benefits, however I chat to them more in depth regarding their symptoms and dietary intake to assess which may be more benefical for them! SO…. if you have: -Elevated cholesterol and heart issues as well as slight joint stiffness- take Krill -Elevated cholesterol, skin and behavioural dysfunctions, moderate to severe joint pain and full hair- take fish Additionally cod liver oil is also a fantastic alternative to regular fish oil as it contains vitamin D, Vitamin A as well as higher content of EPA/DHA (what elicit the main functions from fish oil e.g. joint health, brain development and immune support) Consuming fish in your diet twice a week is the best option such as salmon, tuna and other deep sea varieties, however if you are not a fish lover supplementation may be more suitable for you! (also if possible choose liquid instead of capsule form as it is better absorbed and higher in concentration and only requires 5mls (1 teaspoon) instead of 4-6 capsules, therefore if you can opt for liquid is best with many brand having pleasant flavoured varieties :) So eat more fish in your day, to keep inflammatory diseases at Bay :D
