BAYELSA UNITED FC BRIBED BY GOMBE UNITED? This is an is unfolding story It is true that there are salary arrears for the players of Bayelsa United – the state-owned Football Club. This is the back story of the quagmire of the Bayelsa State owned football outfit. The story of the bribery scandal was made public by one of the players who preferred anonymity. According to him, the bribery deal was perfected through one GAMBO GIDEON, and the front runners at the centre of the bribe-not-to-play scandal are SALOMON JUNIOR – the Captain, Oladapo Femi, Azubiuke Okechukwu and Bernard Okorowanta. Other who might have benefited from the bribe include Ambrose Vanzekin and Ebitimi Agogo. The Bayelsa State Government inherited a huge amount of debt believed to have been owed the players from the past administration. The Restoration Administration has conducted an audit and has processed components of the arrears that is due the players. Already, the players of Bayelsa United have been assured of immediate payments by the third week of November. Gombe’s gain in all of this is that the team will have 3 automatic points if the match with Bayelsa United is not played. It is surprising that, like the proverbial tortoise that has endured incarceration for a long while, the footballers who are supposed to make the State proud have become vulnerable to bribery. Bayelsans who are privy to the disgraceful scandal suggested that the State Government should take disciplinary action in line with the rules of the Nigerian Football Association. One ex-international from Rivers State who had hindsight of the ugly incident remarked that it is surprising that the several bouts of scandals which has rocked Nigeria’s Football Governing House has sneaked into our own Bayelsa United.
