BCF WOMEN BRING MEDALS Two Batswana women chess players made the country proud when they won two medals at the just-ended Zone 4.3 in Namibia. Out of a total of nine rounds played in the women’s sections, Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Onkemetse Francis came second with a score of 6/9 points, winning a silver medal for Botswana while Woman Fide Master (WFM) Kgalalelo Botlhole also came third with a score of 6/9points, winning a bronze. Another member of the women’s team was WFM Thapelo Francis. A media statement from Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) says the women registered draws in the 9th round, which was the most critical round of the tournament as it decided the medallists. Francis registered a draw against Jolly Nepando of Namibia while Botlhole registered a draw against Michelle Fisher of South Africa. In the open section, Batswana men finished on 5th position through Thato Olebile, 10th through Barileng Gaealafshwe and 12th through Thabo Gumpo. The tournament was attended by players from Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Angola, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. Meanwhile, the BCF has entered into a partnership with African Comprehensive HIV Aids Partnership (ACHAP) and Cally Clothing which gears to use sport as a vehicle to convey HIV/Aids Prevention messages. The BCF and ACHAP will host a workshop targeting sports leaders in Botswana this weekend at Yarona Country Lodge themed: ‘Using Sports to reach out to the masses HIV/AIDS Prevention”.
