BE AWARE FAMILIES: UNDERHANDEDNESS AND.....LIES....AND LIES (I have talked to parents recently that had to have an attorney to move their child from their homeschool to a cluster site...so that their child would get decent services, another was having her child out of schools for more then 2 weeks...because the district made it hard for her to go at a cluster site, very few Mckay request has been granted in the last 2-3 years, there is a law suit from the district that would stop the private mckay....and we are stuck with whats coming.......) In our elementary schools we have cluster ESE class. The reason these programs were formed back in early 90s was because the schools didnt have the $$$ (which there was much more at the time...then today) to support and services our ESE Students in all schools. Recently, the ESE Department leadership decided to make changes...of course without any input from the community or even....experts. The plan is to offer the families to go back in their home schools. They are making it very appealing by saying your children will be raised around their friends in their neighborhood...etc also by using inclusion to get what they want. (Know that your child would be changed schools to go in another ESE Class) Isnt the perfect picture ? Our children getting the support and services they need in their home schools...in all schools? THE SCHOOLS NEED TO GET THE APPROPRIATE FUNDING FOR THIS TO BE A REALITY !!! This is not “my opinion”….this is a FACT (finding in the 200k ESE review by Evergreen Solutions ) that the ratio of student staffing in Broward County is 20/1 versus in Miami Date 10/1….BIG difference. It is clearly said in the report that the staff reduction and staff case load made it impossible for out ESE Students to get appropriate support and services. Well that would take our Superintendent to allocate a lot of $$$....and this is not happening. The ESE Education is getting is CUTS, CUTS and more CUTS....and now they want to destroy the clusters program(the little bit we have...) not to put back in the ESE Education....but to SAVE on 2 bus routes. The Plan: While closing the centers and using as a main excuse we are very concern of teaching students with a big difference in grade/age....The plan the ESE leadership has is to create the same thing in ALL schools. Let me explain: In the leadership exact word: “when we will have 5 children that needs an ESE class setting….I will create a class”…..which means that will have 5 graders mixed with kindergarten students, 1st grader students…..HOW CAN THIS BE APPROPRIATE ? In couples of years….the actual clusters site wont exist….because slowly the children will be moved…..the autism coaches will start travelling in other schools….(because for the district to get funding for the autism coaches they must have a certain number of ESE class in the school. (Im sure they going to want the funding coming with the autism coaches….so the autism coaches will travel between schools…more CUTS) While the clusters site (now called “Special Programs”…since the transition started) are not perfect and might need some “remodeling” (Example: students in clusters….who shouldn’t be, Principals using the “there is a cluster site near”….so ESE students are sent in another school when they wouldn’t need to…etc) but what’s happening would mostly put our Elementary Schools….the same way then middle schools are for our ESE Students. (We all know that what’s happening when we transition from elementary to middle schools….it’s an atrocity in many case for our ESE Students.)
