BE PREPARED TONIGHT! With the impending storms this evening please take every precaution necessary to protect yourself, your family, and your property. Here are a few reminders that could help you avoid property damage: 1. Park all the vehicles you can inside your garage, barn, overhang, carport, etc. If you don’t have anywhere to do this it may be a good idea to check with a friend or neighbor to see if you could park in their barn/outbuilding. This will help to prevent your vehicle from having hail damage as well as getting damaged from falling debris from trees. 2. Move all loose items around the outside of your house to an indoor location. This could include patio furniture, trampolines, grills, kid toys, etc. If you have no place to store them inside, try tying down the larger items. Wind gusts blowing these items towards your house can cause significant damage. 3. Check your sump pump in the basement to be sure it’s working properly. It’s also a good idea to check the pump every 30 minutes or so while it’s raining to be sure it hasn’t shut off. This will help to prevent water from backing up in your basement. 4. Unplug your TV’s from the wall. With all the anticipated lightning strikes, this will prevent your TV’s getting damage from a strike. 5. If you have a generator be sure it’s ready to go and that you have plenty of gas to run it for a couple days if necessary. 6. Think personal safety first! Head to the basement, most inward room, or to a storm-cellar when necessary. NEVER risk your personal safety to prevent property damage! These are just a couple preventative tips that may help you avoid a claim. However, some claims are unavoidable. If you do have a claim, here are a few tips to keep in mind: 1. Take pictures as soon as it is safe to do so. The more you document, the easier the claims process will go. 2. Contact emergency personnel only when absolutely necessary. 3. When it is safe to do, take steps WITHIN reason to prevent any further damage. This can be with the use of tarps, etc. 4.
