BE YOURSELF: Everyone else is already taken In the 1980’s the Movie, The Jewel of the Nile, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner was released. Both were going to the Middle East to find a precious gem called, The Jewel of the Nile. However, when they found the Jewel of the Nile they were shocked to discover it was a person. The most valued thing in the story is a human being. Everyone has character flaws. Some of those flaws come from our parents, others we picked up from our friends and society while others we incorporated during our adolescent years when we tend to believe we know everything, but can’t figure anything out. However, the one fact that we as humans tend to ignore is that with all of our faults, because we are created in the image of God, we are the Jewel of the Nile, a precious gem. So appreciate who you are, be yourself, everyone else is already taken. Being yourself doesn’t mean you don’t improve on yourself, but it does mean you don’t try to be someone you are not. You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me! (Psalm 139:13-18)
