COMMUNITY VISIONING MEETING Regarding NE MLK and Alberta Street Lot Development TUESDAY MARCH 4 6-9PM WHERE: NNEBA Headquarters 311 NORTH IVY STREET PORTLAND, OR 97227 504-841-5032 On Feb 25th, there was a packed room at NNEBA where members of the community came together to share their thoughts on the NE MLK and Alberta property, and on a variety of issues overall. Special thanks to our facilitator Joan Brown-Kline and to NNEBA for hosting this session. Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend, express your point of view and ask critical questions. It is true that in certain ways we dont all agree on everything. However, one of the things that was shared and echoed was the need to have a process where the public can come together to find common ground, discuss how decisions are made by the City and PDC and perhaps a process beyond this one property. The specific ideas and desires that were shared will be captured and summarized for this next session. A compelling narrative traces Mahs Welsh forbears from the 1700s, as well as two generations of her Chinese ancestors, across two oceans in search of brighter economic futures in America. These immigrant stories are told through visual imagery and video interwoven with Mah’s versatile improvised musical styling’s and performance art. The second half of the show blends live storytelling, song, and borderline stand up comedy to depict what it was like growing up “half-Chinese” in 1960s Idaho and capture Mahs desire to find a place of belonging. Thought-provoking and moving, Mahs sharp wit sheds light on the complicated experience of being `E-Bon `E-Bon in America.
