BEHIND THE PROG #36 Our amateur team drew 3-3 in this preliminary match and did not qualify for the Olympic Games held in Australias summer of November and December.Oh but they did through the back door as several countries withdrew.Eleven nations participated in the tournament which included walk-overs,whitewashes and more withdrawals.One of these withdrawals was that of Hungary following the occupation of Budapest by Soviet troops.Three Eastern bloc countries entered and as they hadnt developed professional leagues it was amateurs competing against their strongest sides.Great Britain beat Thailand 9-0 in the first round but met Bulgaria again in the following round and were given the V sign as the East European scorers names in the 6-1 rout all ended in V -Kolov,Milanov and Dimitrov.We went one better than Germany however as although they fielded the 1954 World Cup winning side they lost to the eventual Olympic winners the Soviet Union whose team was the nucleus of the first Uefa European champions in 1960.The silver medalists were Hungary.With the introduction of the professionals being allowed to compete in the 80s Great Britain will never be a threat again as they were in the early part of the 20th century.Amen.
