BFAR launches national program for municipal FishR in Calabarzon LUCENA CITY, Quezon, Sept. 18 (PIA) -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) launched last Sept. 3 in this city, the national program for municipal Fisherfolk Registration (FishR) in Calabarzon after launching in Bicol, Eastern Visayas and Davao. The program aims to fast-track, enhance and complete the municipal fishergolk registration nationwide as required under the Fisheries Code of 1998. Upon completion of the program, the Bureau would be able to come up with a national database that would be necessary in designing programs to aid the local municipalities for managing, regulating, conserving and protecting fishery resources and establishing a Comprehensive Fishery Information System. The Bureau will work hand in hand with the municipalities and cities in the five provinces including NCR – to complete the registration in their respective areas using a simplified and standard form and FRS data management system. BFAR will also give technical assistance to coastal municipalities and cities in the said provinces to facilitate the registration process. BFAR expects the full cooperation of all the coastal and inland municipal mayors together with their municipal agricultural officers (MAOs), agricultural technicians for fisheries (ATFs) and municipal fisheries aquatic resource management (MFARMC) chairmen as well as all BFAR regional directors, provincial fishery officers, and some selected NGOs and NGAs. During the launching, bureau officers and Fish R focal persons met with the project implementers; the provincial fisheries officers, MAOs, and ATFs and trained them on the new Fisherfolk registration system, its mechanics of registration and the information education and communication (IEC) strategies that the implementers could adapt in their area of jurisdiction. These trainings will guide them in the actual registration, familiarization of the FRS database, formulation of communication plans and in the over-all implementation of the program. Calabarzon covers 5 provinces namely Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon. It includes the National Capital Region in terms of fisheries administration. There are 10 cities, 7 of which are coastal; 132 municipalities, 88 are coastal; and 4,008 barangays, 923 are coastal. Two major lakes in the country are found here, the Laguna de Bay in Laguna, and Taal lake in Batangas. In 2012, the region ranked 4th among other regions in terms of value of fisheries production with contribution of P22.87 billion. (BFAR4A/CPG, PIA4A) article=631379484772#sthash.nx1965nQ.dpuf
