BJP has faced a humiliating defeat in the Bihar by elections. The results from other states are far from satisfactory as well. I’ll discuss about the Bihar by poll in this post as 10 seats were up for grab in Bihar and BJP has messed it up, BIG TIME. It may come across as a shocker for most of the non Biharis but resident and non-resident Biharis aren’t surprised, not even one bit. BJP was always in for a defeat in Bihar by poll elections because of a number of reasons. The sum total of all the reasons hints at one obvious fact, that it is BJP that has lost, the grand opportunist alliance of Lalu-Nitish-Congress hasn’t won. And it is so typical of BJP to gift a sure shot victory to their adversaries on a golden platter. Let us look at the reasons: 1. No Visible face: There is no visible face of Bihar BJP. Sushil Kumar Modi, Bihar BJP chief who has been Nitish Kumar’s yes man for all his life is a very weak candidate and he doesn’t have any follower base of his own. He also lacks the political appetite and willpower. Bihar BJP is still to find a match for Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav. Remember lack of face was the sole reason behind BJP’s non-performance in Delhi 2. No rallies/preparations: BJP assumed that people will come out and vote in the name of Narendra Modi and hence stayed away from organizing rallies. NiLuCongress alliance went on hosting rallies one after the other where they ripped BJP’s poll promises apart while laying a special emphasis on BJP’s so called “anti-Muslim, anti-Dalit” approach. 3. No star power – I am sure the results would have been completely opposite, Had Narendra taken the pains of visiting a couple of constituencies. Even the presence of local leaders like Ram Vilas Paswan and Radhamohan Singh, who are now working in the Modi cabinet could have altered the political equations 4. Inability to attract Muslim/Dalit votes – When you have a fabulous Bihari Muslim leader like Shahnawaz Hussain, why not utilize him in attracting Muslims votes. And if Jitan Ram Manjhi can attract Dalit votes, Ram Vilas Paswan certainly is his grand daddy. But BJP Bihar failed to use these leaders effectively 5. General disinterest – I don’t know why but Bihar BJP seemed pretty indifferent about the by poll elections. Modi and co. will have to understand that this apathy will not do. It is easy to reach to the pinnacle of success but it takes real courage and character to maintain that position. I hope with the upcoming state elections, BJP will try harder and not act like an intelligent but a wayward student. - Atul Kumar Mishra
