BLACK HISTORY Latin Soul Music by Carlito Rovira February 2014 The impact that the African American people had on Puerto Rican immigrants was tremendously political and resulted in the solidarity in the anti-racist struggles and achievements made by the Civil Rights Movement. Those mutual social experiences would soon be translated into artistic renditions, especially in music. The affinities that developed between the two nationalities were based on several commonalities: both groups had to guard themselves from police brutality, the violence of racist white gangs; shared humiliation by racist white teachers and school officials, living in the same slum neigborhoods; incarcerated in the same prisons and so forth. This allowed the newly arrived Puerto Rican immigrants to develop a sense of connection with African Americans who were concentrated in the urban industrial centers such as Chicago, Philadelphia and New York. One can never separate what takes place in the social and economic life from what occurs in culture. Oppressed and exploited people throughout history used music as a way to express and shield themselves spiritually from the emotional and psychological consequences of their reality. The development of music throughout the Western Hemisphere has always been rooted in African music, especially in the surrounding regions of the Caribbean. But when African Americans came from the South to the Northeast it caused an acculturation in the Puerto Rican community. In the literary and performing arts, African American influence has been apparent, most notably in Latin Jazz. By the mid-1960s, the Nuyorican Movement came into existence, a cultural and political expression of second generation Puerto Ricans living in the United States. It was in this period that new Latin musical genres were born such as Salsa and Boogaloo. But one in particular contained definite African American influences from the famous Motown sound. This new Latino musical form came to be known as Latin Soul.
