Poor visibility in snow and blowing snow is expected or occurring. A fast moving Alberta clipper is diving southeast into the Dakotas tonight. An area of snow is currently falling over portions of Southern Saskatchewan and is expected to move into Southern Manitoba tonight into Thursday morning. Behind the snow, winds are expected to increase out of the northwest as a strong ridge of high pressure quickly builds in behind the clipper system. Sustained winds as high as 50 km/h and gusts up to 70 km/h will combine with the freshly fallen snow and existing loose snowpack. This will cause widespread reduced visibilities in blowing snow to less than 800 metres at times beginning Thursday morning over western regions and the southern Red River Valley by early Thursday afternoon. Winds are expected to diminish this evening over southern Manitoba. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. Weather Advisories for blowing snow are issued when winds are expected to create blowing snow giving poor visibility to 800 metres or less for at least 3 hours. Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required. Please continue to monitor your local media or Weatheradio for further updates. If you would like to report severe weather, you can call 1-800-239-0484 or send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports to #MBStorm.
