BNSF Railway will participate in Officer on the Train events in 11 states today for International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD). Every year, avoidable accidents occur due to drivers racing through crossings in an attempt to beat oncoming trains. ILCAD was founded to spread awareness of how dangerous this is. A train has the right of way at crossings, can take a mile or more to stop, and cannot swerve to miss drivers or pedestrians on the tracks. The Officer on the Train events help local law enforcement and the rail industry educate the public on rail crossing safety laws. Local law enforcement officers ride trains at selected crossings to get a first-hand view of what train crews see. Offenders can receive citations. Today’s Officer on the Train events are taking place in the following cities.
