BOOK REVIEW :DANIELS DIARY Rating ***** Author Rajeshwari Chauhan Pages:359 Paperback-Matt Finish ISBN:978-93-82711-21-6 Publishers: Vitasta I was quite surprised to find that i had been requested to write a review about this book! When the book come into my hands eventually-it was a pleasant surprise to find that it was a beautifully crafted book published by my friend Renu Kaul Verma. I started reading and found that it was not possible to put down the book-i had reached a hundred pages by evening. Not only is the book well written ,but it transports the reader to a world to Rajasthan and the world of forts, palaces and court intrigue -I refer here to Arrow the Prince of Sumangarh ,otherwise known as Arvindsinh and his bride to be called Suzan! The story is being narrated by Mrinalini who is an artist in her own realm-a restoration expert to boot, who has been invited to complete the restoration work before Sumangarh is turned into a hotel! Here she meets the cherubic little nephew of Arrow, Bubbles who makes life in Sumangarh bearable. Mrinalini meets the suave and sophisticated Surajsinh who is masquerading as a chauffeur in the service of Arrow but is not actually one .A game of intrigue and suspicion are interwoven by the author who exhibits her expertise in the world of art,paintings- both Indian and western ,a veritable daughter of the Muse; as she tinkers with poetry, ghazals, couplets and spins a story about a Portuguese adventurer at Akbars Court who unwittingly falls in love with Jodhabai the beloved Queen of Akbar! The story emmanates from the contents of a diary found in the dungeon-an autobiography of Daniel! The story unfolds with Daniels failure to teach Jodha Bai the intrinsic secrets of painting in western style.Daniel keeps getting into various situations but manages to stay as a favourite at Akbars Court. As he realises the futility of achieving his misplaced and one sided love for the Queen ,he decides to leave for Portugal,is robbed ,and finds himself in the company of the beautiful Mahamaya, Chimmiya and her fellow courtesans! The girls enjoy his company and when Mahamaya is found murdered, the needle of suspicion falls on Daniel who though married to Mahamaya; is locked away in a dungeon, where he dies!A spark of love is kindled in Mrinalinis heart by Surajsinh -one wonders whether it will burst into flame! Overall -a book worth reading from the first to the last page!If you have not bought it-do so poste haste!
