BREAKING NEWS: The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) has published a decision memo that states that "continuing the requirement for certification for bariatric surgery facilities would not improve health outcomes for Medicare beneficiaries. Therefore, CMS has decided to remove this certification requirement." CMS also decided that no changes will made to the section that covers bariatric surgery procedures in the National Coverage Determination (NCD) Manual (Section 100.1). CMS found that evidence continues to support that "open and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP), laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), and open and laparoscopic biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) continue to be reasonable and necessary for Medicare beneficiaries who have a body-mass index (BMI) ≥ 35, have at least one co-morbidity related to obesity, and have been previously unsuccessful with medical treatment for obesity." Further small changes to the NCD manual are covered in detail in the decision memo.
