BRIEFING: Burma’s Nationwide Census to Cost Nearly US$60 Million Burma will conduct a nationwide census next year, the first in more than 30 years, at an expected cost of US$58.5 million, state media report. The 12-day census will run from late March to early April next year, The New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported Friday. The United Nations will contribute $5 million, while $2.8 million will come from AusAID and $16 million from the British government. Norway and Switzerland are also expected to contribute. Burma’s last nationwide census in 1983 reported a population of 35.3 million people, compared to the latest estimates of about 60 million people.
