BSNL to install 8,700 telecom towers State-run telecom company BSNL is planning to strengthen its position in the country. The company, which has been struggling to keep pace with private telcos, is expected to invest Rs.4,000 crore in this fiscal to expand its mobile network. The fifth largest player in terms of mobile subscribers will reportedly install 8,700 telecom towers. "As part of our phase 7 expansion plans, we are planning to invest Rs.4,000 crore on mobile network. We will be installing 8,700 mobile towers of which 50 per cent are 3G,” R K Upadhyay, BSNL chairman and managing director told The Times of India. “Orders have already been placed for sourcing equipment for north and south zones. A contract for the east zone will be placed soon,” he added. The expansion is expected to complete by March 2014.
