Here is what I tried to make, a brief synopsis of what has transpired. This is Oscar. He is a 16 year old male Umbrella Cockatoo. Jackie Schaible, from Parrot Guardian in Winston Salem, rescued Oscar from Kentucky when his elderly owner turn him over to a vet clinic to be put down in February of 2013. The call was put out and Jackie stepped up to the plate. Oscar had some issues with his feet, he chewed them, but within three months, with some TLC and meds, he was like a new bird, and sweeter than ever. He was then adopted to a family who fell in love with him. The first night in their home, Oscar fell in his cage injuring his right foot. He started chewing again to the point he chewed one of his toes off. He was then returned to Jackie, and so the long journey began again to try and help him. He was taken to an AVBP and put on a wide variety of antibiotics and pain meds (extensive list). The second visit he decided the best course of action would be to take the foot. X-rays showed a severe deterioration of the bones in that foot, but it was questionable as to whether this deterioration had spread any higher in the leg. After amputation the foot was basically dissected and the bones in the remaining back toe were totally deteriorated. Both the foot and tissue samples were sent off and results came back inconclusive, other than stating chronic inflammatory response. For about two weeks Oscar seemed to be relatively pain free and able to rest but started chewing up his leg into his body. He was taken back to be sewn up which lasted about two days. He has been to the AVBP a total of 5 times, yet still there is no definitive diagnosis. To date Oscars bills including the plethora of medications now have exceeded 3500.00 and Jackie is at a loss as to where to turn. She does not want to give up on this sweet little fellow and hopes that maybe a fresh set of eyes can make the difference in life and death. She has been in touch with an AVBP vet at North Carolina State that has agreed to look at Oscar’s case, but with the money she has already spent, and the other birds in her rescue, she needs our help. Let’s give this little guy a second chance. Let’s hope the root of the problem can be found, and together WE can save Oscars life.
