BUZZARDS BAY TRAFFIC JAM 4-01-2014 7AM - 3 fuel barges awaited passage through the Cape Cod Canal this morning. Just over 2.5 miles away from the West Island Town Beach. 3 fuel barges (barges of this kind can carry an estimated 120,000 barrels of fuel - or 5 million gallons each) were simultaneously paused off the town beach awaiting the OK to pass into the east entrance of the canal. All 3 barges were headed for Boston., at least one with #2 Jet Fuel. For many who went through the 2003 Oil Spill here in April of 2003, this kind of traffic - double hulled barges, escorts or not - still gives the jitters to this day. On April 28, 2003 almost 100,000 gallons of thick #6 oil spilled into the bay - with catastrophic results - heres the link for a look back: buzzardsbay.org/accidentsummary.htm
