BYZANTIUM I used to be a huge Neil Jordan fan, but it’s hard to remember the last great Neil Jordan film. I’m a sucker for vampires, so Neil Jordan plus vampires meant this was likely a must see. But I was shocked that it was only playing at one theater in L.A.! All in all, it’s a decent movie. It was worth seeing, but it’s not a must see. And as soon as a vampire was out in the daylight, part of me checked out. There’s a lot of vampire mythology that filmmakers can play with. But vampire plus sun equals ash, so I can’t embrace that idea. The best stuff in the movie deals with the Brotherhood of Vampires mostly towards the beginning and the very end. The movie was very compelling at those times. And this is really the first time that Gemma Arterton has stood out to me. She looks amazing in the movie and she’s very engaging. The middle of the movie really drags and desperately needed tightening up. And the main relationship between the two “young” people was never compelling or held my interest. I just didn’t care. I would really love to see Neil Jordan make another great movie. Or actually a lot of them!
