Baba Muktanandas Shishyabhava (Identification as a Disciple) - TopicsExpress

Baba Muktanandas Shishyabhava (Identification as a Disciple) ~ Although Baba #Muktanandas spiritual influence was felt by the people who visited him, he carefully concealed his full attainment from everyone so that he would appear to be simply a devoted disciple of Bhagavan #Nityananda. He was unassuming in both word and action. Baba and Bhagavan Nityananda lived together in this way for about 5-years. One of Baba Muktanandas favorite passages from the Rigveda (1.54.7) was I Only one who obeys can command. Baba Muktananda explains the meaning in this way, One who has not learnt to be a worthy disciple cannot become a true Guru. ~ Baba Muktananda often tells the story about how Bhagavan Nityananda once told him not to eat a Mango. Baba not only didnt eat that particular mango but he didnt eat any other mango until Bhagavan gave him one to eat, 12-years later. This is what it means to obey a command. Bhagavan had told Baba to live near the Gavdevi Temple, and Baba has lived in that spot from that moment on. Baba Muktananda used to go for the Bhagawans darshan once a week, usually on Mondays, when there was not much of a crowd. It was beautiful to see Baba with his Guru. Baba would gracefully bow to offer his salutation he would stand in the corner. He would not speak unless spoken to. Both would be silent for some time, and then Bhagawan Nityananda would begin to speak. He would talk about the events of the week and the people who had come to see him. Baba Muktanandas replies were always affirmative. His ho,ho (yes, yes) was like punctuation at the end of every few sentences from his Guru Nityananda. An hour or two would pass this way, and then Muktananda would be given the permission to go. Again, the same graceful Pranam, and Baba would leave Kailas Nivas, with his face flushed and radiant. ~ If Baba Muktananda was Self-realized, he was a Master in his own right and so it was not obligatory for him to remain with Nityananda. Why did he choose to do so? Once Swami Prajnananda ventured to ask him this question. He replied, It is not befitting a true disciple, no matter how great the spiritual heights he may have attained, to separate from his Guru. Such an act would show ingratitude towards the Guru for what he had given to the disciple. On the other hand, unlimited benefit lies hidden in the blessings of a Guru who is pleased by a disciples humble devotion. And he always behaved like a seeker, taking care with the utmost humility and tact not to show himself off in his Guru Nityanandas presence. ~ Source: A Search for the Self by Swami Prajnananda
